So many laws, rules and regulations govern hiring staff,
from the hours they work, conditions of operation
to the size and number of washrooms per employee.

Dear bakery Entrepreneur.

There is NO getting away from the fact that EVERY BUSINESS requires employee’s.

That’s right! I said EVERY business requires employee’s.

It is a hard fact that as employer’s, our business will only survive with the quality of employee we hire. This is never more true, “as it is” in the food trades.

Hiring staff for any business can be a really tricky, but hiring staff for starting a bakery can be as traumatic an event as you might imagine.

The food trade, for which we are contemplating hiring staff to operate our business as an employee, can and will destroy the business without the employer’s full understanding and control of that employee collected from the recent job posting.

Lets look at some of the reasons why that last statement is so great.
:evil: We are putting ourselves up for scrutiny

:evil: We are making judgment calls on the face value of the person in front of us.

:evil: We have to make a decision as to the quality of that persons integrity.

:evil: We are about to engage someone to operate a portion of our business.

:evil: We will have to abide by government regulations.

:evil: We are going to have to pay them for that opportunity.

:evil: We might also have to fire that same person.

:evil: We CANNOT allow food contamination to be sold.

It is therefore, up to the employer as to the type and experience of the person we hire, while compiling a job posting for the hiring staff to select the employee as a staff member to our business.

What do I mean by type?

Well, I certainly do NOT mean anything to do with color or nationality or gender.

What I mean here is the way a person has come dressed for the interview.

:roll: Are their hands and fingernails dirty or clean?

:roll: Are they wearing torn and dirty looking jeans?

:roll: Do they attend the interview covered in ugly facial piercings?

:roll: Is the hair neat and tidy or as I have seen in some interviews, dripping wet and a tangled mess?

It is a sad fact, that in today’s society, cleanliness is no longer next to godliness!

And some people just do not apply their attire to the job application. If they did our job of hiring staff would be even harder.

So what should you do in the interview?

For the hiring staff.

Keep a program sheet of questions pertinent to the applicable position being offered.

Make sure that the application forms have been properly entered and completed.

The application has the information you are looking for and can be read.

There may very well be a large number of candidates for the position being offered, so allow sufficient time to interview each candidate.

Tell the applicant if there is a prospect of employment at the interview. Your time is as valuable as your applicant.

Remember some questions cannot be asked!

Questions an employer might ask.

  1. How old are you. Especially if you appear under age.
  2. How much experience do you have in the position of employment
  3. Can you handle money correctly and give proper change
  4. Where were you last employed
  5. Why did you leave
  6. How much wage do you expect
  7. When can you start
  8. Do you have your own vehicle
  9. May I inquire from your last employer
